On Saturday, Nov. 16, at approximately 8:50 p.m., a deputy from the Calvert County Sheriff's Office observed a gold Ford Mustang speeding southbound on MD Route 261 near 17th Street in Chesapeake Beach.

The deputy activated emergency lights and sirens in an attempt to initiate a traffic stop; however, the driver failed to comply, leading to a pursuit that spanned nearly two miles, officials say.

The chase came to its conclusion when the Mustang crossed the double yellow line into oncoming traffic, veered off the roadway, and collided with a telephone pole.

Deputies administered first aid until paramedics arrived, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver has not been identified as of Monday, Nov. 18.

The involved deputies were equipped with body-worn cameras, prosecutors noted and the footage is expected to be reviewed as part of the investigation.

This is a developing story.
